CPD Requirements
As a Registrant you are required to complete a minimum of 30 Hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) per year. There are no limits to how much CPD you can complete.
NCIP Definition of CPD
CPD is the way in which registrants continue to learn and develop throughout their careers so they keep their skills and knowledge up to date and are able to practise safely and effectively. Membership of the NCIP requires that every practicing member must complete at least 30 hours of CPD per year. Within these thirty hours, there should be no more than fifteen hours of self-study (books, podcasts, etc.). Any courses attended should have a record or certificate of completion from the provider or tutor.
The definition of acceptable CPD is:
Any learning the member undertakes can be claimed to be used for the maintenance, improvement, and augmentation of competence, knowledge, and skills. To further ensure that the member can practice safely, effectively, ethically, and legally within their evolving scope of practice. The scope of the member’s practice is considered to include an emphasis on the type of practice, client base and conditions/issues addressed, and any specialty areas addressed. Therefore, in ensuring the CPD meets the scope of their practice, it must be clear how the choice of CPD meets these individual practice needs.
REGISTER REQUIREMENTS FOR CPD
As a registered member, it is necessary to:
- Keep an up-to-date and accurate record of CPD activities.
- Be able to demonstrate how you reflected, planned, actioned, and evaluated your development needs.
- Submit your CPD record for audit on request
When you join the Register, and when you renew your membership, we will ask you to agree to the following terms and conditions:
'I confirm and agree that I will ensure that I undertake and record continuing professional development (CPD) in line with the Register’s requirements and will abide by and fully cooperate with the Register’s CPD audit procedure, as may be varied from time to time.'
How do I identify my CPD needs?
Discuss your CPD in supervision as this will guide you. Ensure that when choosing your CPD you think about the scope of your practice, including client base, topics addressed, and special interests. You should ensure that these are considered and supported in your choice of CPD.
See the advice on choosing CPD on the NCIP website, in particular on levels of and accreditation of CPD.

What counts as CPD?
Supervision does not count as CPD. This is an entirely separate requirement of membership. Read the definition above, you will note that these could include:
- Conferences - attending or giving presentations
- E-learning CPD modules
- Formal education, lectures, seminars, or courses
- Peer support groups
- Organising specialist groups
- Reading books, journals, or internet articles - 2 hours log max for each
- Supervising research
- TV and radio programmes
- Workshops
- Work shadowing
- Writing articles or papers (these must be directly relevant to practice and be in peer-reviewed journals)
There are no limits to how much CPD you can complete. 30 Hours is the minimum.
If you have multiple special interests, then to remain a credible specialist in each, you should consider additional CPD for each area.
How should I record CPD?
